18-year-old barista refuses to speak after her manager says she's not paid to talk to her coworkers: 'I went completely silent. No greetings. No “excuse me.” Just silent working robot mode.'

This one goes out to all of the kids who got in trouble for talking too much in class. I was always an attentive student who wanted to be as well-behaved as possible. I hated getting in trouble, and the one thing I ever got in trouble for in Elementary School was talking too much. In 4th grade, I had to pull my card (a draconian behavior surveillance system where a green card means you've been good all day, a yellow card means you're pushing it, and a red card means you're one wrong move away from a visit to the principal's office) from green to yellow, and I very nearly burst into tears. I understand that talking too much can be distracting to those around you who are trying to get work done. But if there's nothing else going on, there's no reason why you shouldn't have a quick little yap session.

  • The barista in this story had every right to have a quick conversation with her coworker, but her manager hates fun and shut that down quickly. Instead of continuing to talk, she did the exact opposite. She stopped talking, even when common sense would permit her to do so.

If an employee is prioritizing talking over working to the point they're distracting others I will have a quiet private conversation with them about how I need their

    piddlesthethug The amount of managers, 2-3 levels above the workers they interact with that don't introduce themselves and let people know their title is obscene... Let alone just interact in a normal human way. If you can fire me, you should at least tell me your position. How do I figure out if you're someone giving me a valid order or some Karen saying some nonsense otherwise?

    xubax I'm of two minds on this. Some people pause their working when they talk. Which I used to be guilty of. I'd be raking leaves (high school job) with my boss, and I'd stop to talk, and he'd say, "Can't you rake and talk at the same time?" So, sure, you're not a machine, you can't work like a machine, but you can minimize the effect on your work by being conscious of whether you're keeping up.
